Reflection of the Week
New Zealand Reflections
Hey all!
Happy Friday. It’s been a couple of weeks since you’ve heard from me, but it’s been for the most fantastic reason. Despite not getting married for another six months, my fiancé Kevin and I trekked to New Zealand during its summer for our honeymoon.
It was the most incredible trip – we climbed mountains, touched glaciers, and saw the gorgeous landscape from a helicopter.
It was a trip of a lifetime, and I feel so grateful that my business allows me to take trips like this, even during my busy season.
As I’ve mentioned, building a mission-driven business is about having an impact and affording you a wonderful life. So, I figured I would take this week to reflect on the latter in my business journey.
Here are some of my takeaways after my trip:
Know yourself and prioritize the things you love
- You’ve heard me say repeatedly that you get to build whatever you want. The critical piece is to know what you want to build and continue to tweak as you learn more. I enjoyed this trip immensely and was excited to return to the business. I don’t take for granted that this business allows me to do what I love and work with the people I love.
Quality over quantity
- I’m pretty fond of routine and comfort, so I like to make sure my trips are luxurious (business class flights, upscale hotels, etc.) Because of these costs, I usually take fewer nicer trips, which is an excellent trade-off for me. I think of my clients similarly – I love working with a small group of ideal clients rather than many clients that might bring in more revenue.
The hustle isn’t required
- Even on vacation, I check my email periodically so I don’t miss anything or come back to a mess. I know entrepreneurs who hate that idea, and I know others who fel like they still have to be very responsive even when they are away. My balance works for me, and I still prioritize the vacation rather than the work. My clients are wonderful with heading my boundary of being out of the office, even if that means a flurry of requests right before I leave. Either way, we get to create the business and balance we want. And no one else gets to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do with your time.
Life is about the present
- My anxiety and planner mentality often cause me to worry about the worst-case scenario or some event in the future. I can’t tell you how many times I fell off a mountain in my head during my trip. I frequently remind myself that I don’t want to miss these moments. And seeing the beautiful scenery helped remind me to be present now. Or I would miss these once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Focus on your people (Intimacy and connection)
- · For me, life is about intimacy and connection. Whether with Kevin on this trip or with my clients in their business. My focus is being open, honest, and vulnerable and holding space for that openness, honesty, and vulnerability from others. I may not always be the best at it, but I try to return to my “why’ when approaching the trip and my business.
Questions of the Week
- Is your business serving you?
- Are you currently doing anything in your business because you feel like you should do it rather than because you want to?
- What change can you make in your business to feel more fulfilled?
