Reflection of the Week
Empowering the LGBTQ+ Community
Happy Friday, all!
As Pride Month comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the powerful stories that remind us why this month matters—stories that elevate trans visibility and affirm the resilience of our community. This week on the Mission Driven Business podcast, I had the immense privilege of speaking with Sean Ebony Coleman, founder and CEO of Destination Tomorrow. Sean’s work is a powerful testament to what it means to build a business rooted in purpose, and our conversation left me inspired and energized.
Sean’s path hasn’t been easy. He cashed out his 401(k) to fund his dream and encountered countless doors closed in his face. But what struck me most was his unwavering belief in himself. As he said during the episode, “A ‘no’ is just a ‘not right now.’” That mindset shift is everything.
We all hit those walls—those times when the rejections feel louder than the vision. But Sean’s story is a bold reminder that believing in yourself is not a luxury; it’s a necessity, especially for LGBTQ+ and mission-driven entrepreneurs building something the world hasn’t seen yet.
Another powerful insight Sean shared was the value of lived experience. At Destination Tomorrow, they don’t just offer services—they hire people who intimately understand the communities they serve. It’s a business model built on empathy and inclusion, one that prioritizes impact over optics.
And finally, Sean talked about the importance of self-care. Entrepreneurship is stressful, particularly for those of us navigating systemic barriers. Sean starts each day with prayer and meditation and commits to weekly therapy. It’s a practice of sustainability as much as survival.
So here’s the takeaway:
- Bet on yourself, even when it’s scary.
- Let your lived experience be a credential.
- Take care of yourself like your mission depends on it—because it does.
Questions of the Week
- Where in your business journey are you hearing “not right now,” and how can you reframe that response?
- How might your lived experiences be an asset to your clients, team, or community?
- What one act of self-care can you prioritize this week to sustain your vision?
Tool of the Week
This week, I recommend Headspace. It’s a mindfulness and meditation app designed to make self-care simple and accessible. Whether you’re starting your day with Prayer and Medication like Sean, winding down, or carving out a moment of calm in between meetings, Headspace offers guided practices that support mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall well-being.
Stay inspired, keep going, and remember: your work matters.
Until next Friday, Brian
