Happy Friday, all!
This week on the podcast, I shared a framework I use with clients when they’re wrestling with questions like, Should I raise my prices? Should I hire? Am I making the right decision? While those sound like money questions, I’ve found they’re usually alignment questions.
It’s tempting to jump straight to tactics, but I’ve learned that the strongest businesses are built like a staircase: mission, vision, values, strategy, and then tactics. When we skip the foundation, every decision feels heavier than it needs to.
One of my favorite things to tell clients is this: you get to build whatever you want. Your version of success doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Maybe it’s a thriving team. Maybe it’s Fridays off. Maybe it’s fewer clients and more margin in your life. All of those are valid.
The real test isn’t whether your business looks successful from the outside. It’s whether your pricing, calendar, boundaries, and marketing reflect what matters most to you.
I also believe sustainable businesses protect three things: your money, your energy, and your ethics. Profit allows you to keep serving your mission. Boundaries protect your ability to do meaningful work for the long haul. And when your decisions align with your values, even difficult choices become easier to make with confidence.
Before you make your next big business decision, pause and ask whether you’re solving the right problem. Sometimes the answer isn’t changing your pricing or launching something new. Sometimes it’s reconnecting with the reason you started in the first place.
Questions of the Week
- What business decision have you been treating as a money problem that might actually be an alignment problem?
- If someone looked at your calendar, pricing, or boundaries, would they recognize your values?
- What’s one change you could make this month to better protect your money, your energy, or your ethics?
Tool of the Week
Create a simple one-page “Alignment Filter.” Write down your mission, vision, and your top three values. Before making any significant business decision, ask: Does this move me closer to the business and life I actually want to build? Sometimes the best tool isn’t another app—it’s having a clear framework for making decisions.
I also gave an entire presentation on this framework for BIPOC therapists. You can catch the full recording here.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Best,
Brian
