Why You’ll Never Find Balance In Your Business

Happy Friday, all!

This week’s podcast had me rethinking one of the most common goals we hear in entrepreneurship: balance. After an intense tax season, I shared some personal reflections on what happens when your body starts sending signals that something isn’t quite right — in my case, it was sleep disruption for the first time ever.

What that experience reminded me is this: balance isn’t something you achieve and check off your list. It’s something you revisit, adjust, and renegotiate constantly.

We often picture balance as this perfect, steady state where everything — business, health, relationships — runs smoothly at all times. But the reality? Businesses operate in seasons. There are sprint seasons that demand more from you, maintenance seasons where things stabilize, and recovery seasons where rest becomes essential.

The tension comes when we expect ourselves to show up the same way in all three.

I see this often with mission-driven entrepreneurs. You care deeply, so when your business needs more, you push harder. But when your body or mind pushes back, it can feel like failure instead of feedback.

Here are a few takeaways to ground you this week:

First, identify your season. Are you in a sprint, maintenance, or recovery phase? Your expectations should match your current reality, not an idealized version of balance.

Second, listen to your warning signs. Whether it’s fatigue, irritability, or lack of focus, these signals show up early for a reason. Ignoring them doesn’t make them disappear — it just delays the adjustment.

Third, build a reset ritual. This doesn’t have to be elaborate. It could be stepping away for a day, reconnecting with peers, or simply creating space to think about your business instead of constantly working in it.

Balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about responding honestly to what your life and business are asking of you right now.

Questions of the Week

  1. What season of business are you currently in, and are your expectations aligned with that reality?
  2. What signals has your body or mind been sending lately, and how have you been responding to them?
  3. What is one small reset you can create this week to reconnect with your energy and priorities?

Tool of the Week

Season Mapping Practice

Take 10 minutes to map out your last 3–6 months into seasons: sprint, maintenance, and recovery.

Then ask yourself:

  • Where did I push too hard?
  • Where did I allow for rest?
  • What would I adjust moving forward?

This simple reflection helps you make more intentional decisions instead of reacting to pressure. It’s a powerful way to bring awareness to your natural cycles — and build a version of balance that actually works for you.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,

Brian
