Performing Your Annual Client Audit

Happy Friday, all!

This week on the podcast, we explored something that can feel a little uncomfortable—but incredibly powerful: conducting an Annual Client Audit.

When most business owners hear the phrase “client audit,” their first reaction is fear. Am I about to fire half my clients? What if my revenue drops? But as I share in this episode, the goal isn’t to hastily cut ties. It’s to gain clarity.

Not all revenue is created equal.

I’ve seen this firsthand with clients (and in my own business). You can have a full roster and still feel drained. You can hit your revenue goals and still dread opening your inbox. On the flip side, you can work with fewer clients, feel energized, respected, and aligned—and actually increase profitability because your best clients are willing to pay more for the value you provide.

A client recently moved from burnout to renewed joy by intentionally evaluating his client base. He realized some relationships were misaligned with his mission and energy. Once he shifted his focus toward his “Core Clients”—the ones he would happily clone—everything changed. Revenue increased. Stress decreased. Confidence returned.

The three-step process is beautifully simple:

  1. Make a list of every client you’ve worked with in the past year.
  2. Score each client (1–5) based on revenue, energy impact, alignment, communication, enjoyment, and whether they’re worth the effort.
  3. Categorize them as Core, Neutral, or Drain.

That’s it.

Here’s what makes this exercise transformational: it forces you to define your ideal client based on lived experience—not just a marketing worksheet.

Who energizes you?
Who pays on time?
Who respects your boundaries?
Who makes you better at what you do?

And equally important—who causes anxiety when their name pops up on your phone?

For mission-driven entrepreneurs, in particular, alignment matters. We didn’t build businesses to recreate corporate burnout with rainbow branding. We built them for impact, autonomy, and sustainability.

If you’ve already completed your year-end financial review, this is your next strategic move. Profit is important—but so is peace.

Set aside 30–60 minutes this week. Audit your client list. Clarity creates momentum.

Questions of the Week

  1. Which of your current clients energizes you and reflects the kind of impact you truly want to create in your business?
  2. Where might you be tolerating “Drain Clients” out of fear, scarcity, or habit rather than alignment?
  3. What is one concrete step you can take this quarter to nurture more Core Clients—through pricing, marketing, or boundaries?

Tool of the Week

Annual Client Audit Spreadsheet

If you’re ready to take action, I’ve created a simple spreadsheet to walk you through the exact process discussed in this week’s episode.

It allows you to:

  • List every client from the past year
  • Score them across key alignment and profitability metrics
  • Automatically see patterns emerge
  • Categorize clients into Core, Neutral, and Drain

This isn’t about judgment. It’s about clarity.

When you intentionally design your client base, you design your energy. And when you design your energy, you design your profit.

Here’s to building businesses that feel as good as they look on paper.

See you next Friday.

Best,
