How to Make Smarter Business Decisions
Happy Friday, all!
As entrepreneurs, we make decisions constantly. What to launch. What to charge. When to hire. When to invest. When to keep going—and when to change course.
But how often do we stop to ask: What would make this a good decision for my business, right now?
That question stuck with me after my recent conversation with Dawn Kennedy, attorney, entrepreneur, and author of Before You Decide.
Dawn described what she calls the “pendulum problem.” We launch something, hear crickets, and pull it back before the market has had enough time to respond. Or we swing the other direction: we become so committed to our idea that we ignore evidence telling us something needs to change.
The goal isn’t certainty. It’s learning to stay in that uncomfortable middle long enough to gather useful information.
That means looking beyond what another entrepreneur did—or what some business guru says you “should” do—and considering your own cash, capacity, timing, market, and risk.
I especially appreciated Dawn’s reminder that two businesses that look nearly identical on paper can make completely different decisions—and both decisions can be right.
Good decision-making isn’t about finding the universally correct answer. It’s about understanding what you’re saying yes to, what that yes will require of you, and whether it moves you toward the business and life you actually want to build.
Sometimes the smartest next step isn’t yes or no.
It’s not yet.
Questions of the Week
- What decision are you currently making based more on outside expectations than your own business realities?
- Where might you be giving up too quickly—or holding on too long?
- What information would help you make your next decision with greater clarity?
