Now is the time. This is the place.

I started Brian Thompson Financial with a simple goal: to help a new generation live fulfilling lives through education and empowerment. I do this by abiding by four core business values:

Financial Planning Designed for Your Life

Adulthood is a complex time, especially in this era of marriage equality, increased entrepreneurship, convoluted tax laws and widespread student debt. You’ll have a tangle of conflicting obligations but also a lot of opportunity for richness, joy and choice in the future.

Now more than ever, Generation X and Y LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs and couples need someone they can trust on their side. That’s where I come in.

The Advice You Need, When You Need It

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and tax attorney, I have the experience and expertise to help you help navigate the complexity of your personal, professional and financial lives.  I listen and help guide you through the process of self-discovery, analyze your personal and/or business situation, and then offer meaningful expert guidance, advice and support that’s tailored to your circumstances, dream, vision and needs.

Whether you’re starting your own business or trying to grow an existing one,  chiseling down debt or just want a better handle on your budget, together, we’ll tackle your questions to help you thrive now and in the future by making good decisions today.

Hi. I’m Brian!

As both a tax attorney and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, I provide comprehensive financial planning for LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs and couples.  I spent a decade representing individuals and small-business owners before the IRS prior to starting my own financial planning firm. I’ve also been with my husband for over seventeen years, so I know firsthand how hard it is to navigate the emotions around and nuances of marriage and money. I also understand the stresses of juggling running a business with a personal life, and I’m here to help lift some of that weight off of your shoulders.

Every client comes to me with different goals and financial concerns. I have many clients who are just starting their business and need guidance on choosing a business structure, implementing an accounting system and developing a budget that helps ensure their operating expenses, tax and personal obligations are paid. I’ve also helped couples navigate the stress of having one spouse with consistent income and another with sporadic income. I’ve also served as an objective facilitator of tough money conversations. Whether it’s paying off $50,000 in credit card debt, amending past tax returns to receive $20,000 in a tax refund or enjoying building wealth, I’ve seen many couples thrive in ways they never thought possible.

Because of my service to the LGBTQ community, I was awarded the Inspiring Leader Award by the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) in 2018. I was also named to InvestmentNews’ 2018 “40 under 40”. I’m a contributor to Forbes and NAPFA Advisor Magazine’s Efficient Planner Column. You can learn more about me and my story in my profile in the New York Times and on my podcast interview that was featured on The Huffington Post.

I graduated cum laude from DePauw University and obtained my Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law. I earned my Certificate in Financial Planning from Boston University Center for Professional Planning and received my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation in 2012.
