It’s never too late to start planning.

I started Brian Thompson Financial with a simple goal: to educate and empower a new generation to align their life with their money. Now’s the time. I’m here to help.

Financial Planning Designed for Your Life

Young adulthood is a complex time, especially in this era of marriage equality, the Affordable Care Act, convoluted tax laws and widespread student debt. You’ll have a tangle of conflicting obligations but also a lot of opportunity for richness, joy and choice in the future.

Hi. I’m Brian Thompson, JD, CFP®

As both a tax attorney and a financial advisor, I provide comprehensive financial planning for couples in the LGBTQ community. I’ve been with my husband for over seventeen years, so I know firsthand how hard it is to navigate the financial implications of marriage. While all states offer the right for same-sex partners to get married, religious freedom restrictions can hinder couples’ rights such as being on each other’s death certificates. Putting both partners on birth certificates is also complicated.

Every couple comes to me with different goals and financial concerns. I’ve helped couples pay off $50,000 in credit card debt, start businesses, buy a home, and amend past tax returns to receive $20,000 in a tax refund. I focus on financial planning that makes lives better now. Then, couples build an even better retirement with firm goals along the way. My clients are all over the country, and I follow the legal trends that both help and hinder same-sex couples in all 50 states.

Because of my service to the LGBTQ community, I was awarded the Inspiring Leader Award by the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) in 2018. I was also recently named to InvestmentNews’ 2018 “40 under 40”. I’m a contributor to Forbes and NAPFA Advisor Magazine’s Efficient Planner Column. You can learn more about me and my story in my profile in the New York Times and on my podcast interview that was featured on The Huffington Post.

I graduated cum laude from DePauw University and obtained my Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law. I earned my Certificate in Financial Planning from Boston University Center for Professional Planning and received my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation in 2012.
