Your Business Is Allowed to Change With You
Happy Friday, all!
I spoke with a client this week who is experimenting with his marketing and service model. It’s worked well for him over the past year, but he’s felt a bit stuck for the past couple of months.
What struck me wasn’t whether his experiments would work—it was his willingness to question things that weren’t necessarily broken.
I’ve been doing some of that myself, especially as I think about my podcast’s future.
We often assume change is necessary when something isn’t working. But sometimes the more interesting question is:
Is what’s working still working for me?
Our businesses change because we change. Our priorities, clients, financial needs, capacity, and definition of success evolve. Yet it’s easy for “this worked” to quietly become “this is how I have to do it.”
Instead of making every change a permanent decision, what if you treated it as an experiment?
Try something. Decide what you want to learn. Pay attention to the results. Then use what you learn to decide what comes next.
You don’t have to wait until something is broken to change it.
Questions of the Week
- What are you doing simply because it’s how you’ve always done it?
- What’s working but no longer feels aligned with where you’re going?
- What’s one small experiment you could try instead?
Tool of the Week
Tiny Experiments by Anne-Laure Le Cunff
This book is a perfect companion to this week’s idea. Le Cunff offers an alternative to rigid goals and plans: use curiosity, small experiments, and what you learn along the way to navigate uncertainty.
That’s a useful mindset for business—and one I’m experimenting with myself right now.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Best,
Brian
